What is The Writing Center?
The Writing Center is a place where
writers working in any discipline meet with trained peer tutors in informal,
one-on-one tutoring sessions that focus on the art of writing.
Who goes to The Writing Center?
The Writing Center welcomes writers
working at any level of experience and proficiency. Whether a writer is a
first-year student struggling with mechanics in a composition class or an
honors student in biology brainstorming ideas for a thesis project, the tutors
in The Writing Center can provide valuable feedback and guidance.
When should I go to The Writing Center?
Writers are welcome and encouraged to
seek tutoring at any stage of the writing process: brainstorming, drafting,
revising, and/or editing. Students are encouraged to seek assistance as
early in the process as possible to allow for plenty of time to implement
necessary revisions and edits.
What should I bring?
Come to The Writing Center with the
assignment and any prewriting or drafts in hand. Sometimes it is helpful if
you bring an additional sample of your writing as well.
What can I expect when I get there?
The Writing Center tutors will help
you brainstorm ideas, organize your writing, construct or improve a central
assertion or thesis statement, incorporate sources appropriately, and/or
explain how you can identify and learn to correct grammar problems in your
writing. Tutors will NOT proofread, edit, correct, or revise your papers FOR
you. Tutoring sessions generally last half an hour.
How do I sign up for
a session in The Writing Center?
Appointment sign-up sheets are
located outside The Writing Center, which is located in 180 Library Technology
Center. Just
sign up and walk in! Writers may visit The Writing Center as often as needed.
Our experience shows that tutoring is most effective with frequent
writer/tutor meetings.
The Writing Center is FREE and open to
students, staff, and faculty. See you there!
