What is the Summer Institute?
The institute seeks to immerse selected students in specially designed academic and experiential programs intended to provide a solid professional foundation for a career in state or federal public service, international business, or science professions. It is specially targeted at developing future leaders who will be adaptive in nature and possessing the experiential and academic foundational skills required to understand strategic issues and acquire global awareness.
The Summer Institute consists of a Foreign Language and Culture Module that is designed to be academically challenging, fun and thoroughly rewarding. This is a residential program. You will live on campus with other students who are taking the same courses as you. Your classmates will be students who have similar interests.
What courses will I take?

The Summer Language Institutes (SLIs) at North Georgia College & State University immerse students in specially designed academic and ex
periential programs of language study to provide a solid foundation for further language learning in addition to setting students on a career path in state or federal public service, international business, or the science professions. The SLIs develop leaders who can anticipate, adapt to, and manage the highly fluid and ever-changing circumstances of the dynamic international environment.
The Summer Language Institutes (SLIs) are carefully tailored language programs of study in Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish. Other languages may be added if sufficient demand can be demonstrated, so if you are interested in another language, just ask. All institutes are academically challenging, intensely fun, and thoroughly rewarding. Because of their nature, the SLIs are residential programs, and as such, all participating students must live on campus for the duration of the program.
The SLIs are accelerated and intensive language programs through an immersion-style approach. Activities are engaging, challenging, and fun within the context of learning the language by substantial interaction between students and native-speaking faculty and assistants. In addition to classroom instruction, participants will enjoy co-curricular activities in language. For North Georgia students, completing one of these institutes will satisfy the Area B language requirement in the Core Curriculum.
For 2010, North Georgia will be offering SLIs in elementary Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), and Russian. French and Spanish will also be offered at the elementary or intermediate level. Class size is limited to 16.

All language institutes are 8 credit hours: 3 hours per course plus 2 hours of language lab.

What will it cost?
Below are the costs for the 2009 North Georgia Summer Institute. We don't have the costs for 2010 yet; however, you can expect the costs to be a little higher next summer.
Module I: Foreign Language and Culture
$2,791 Total:
$1,609 for tuition and fees (8 semester hours)
$992 for room and meals
$190 estimated program fee and books (must be paid by May 1, 2010)
Can I get financial aid to help pay?
Yes. You can use Federal and State aid to help pay for the program. Check out the Financial aid web page for additional information. Click here. Note that our preferred financial aid submission date is 1 March. You will have to fill out the version of the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA) that was created for the previous fall and spring semesters in order to receive financial aid for the summer semester. If you wish to apply for financial aid for the Fall semester, you will have to fill out the next year's version of the FAFSA. You will have to complete two separate FAFSA forms.
Summer 2010 deadlines:
FAFSA application submission date is February 15, 2010.
HOPE application submission date is May 1, 2010
When and how do I pay?
After you have been accepted to the program, a bill will be generated via Banner, our online student information system. You will be able to access your bill and pay online. your bill should be available on 1 June. If you received the HOPE or any other financial aid, the aid will be reflected in your Banner account/invoice. The bill for the Summer Institute must be paid by June 22, 2010.
To access your bill online, just click BANNER (bottom right corner) from www.northgeorgia.edu, select "User Login" to login to Banner and click "Student Invoice" from the Registration menu.
How do I register for classes?
It is not necessary for you to register for your Summer Institute courses. We will register you automatically. Based on your declared major, we will also register you for your Fall 2010 courses manually.
What are the program dates?
The Summer Institute occurs during the second summer session (June 21 - July 30, 2010).
- Module I: Foreign Language and Culture begins on Monday, 21 June, and ends on Friday, 30 July 2010. Check-in for the Summer Institute will occur in the lobby of Donovan Hall on June 21st at 9 AM.
After you mail your confirmation of attendance form to the Undergraduate Admissions Office, you should register for INTRO on our web site (do not select an INTRO that is taking place at the same time as Module 1); click here.
Where will I live during the summer institute?
This is a residential program. You will live on campus in residence halls designated for Summer Institute students. This arrangement facilitates study groups and the immersion-type instruction.
Please note that non-cadet students who remain at North Georgia in the fall semester will then be required to commute, and meet the Residence Policy to commute, in the fall semester unless they had previously been accepted for Fall Semester of 2010 as a resident student.

What are the guidelines and other information?
1. This is a residential program.
2. You must live on campus in designated residence halls.
2. You may have a car on campus.
3. You must attend all classes and scheduled activities.
4. You cannot work part time during the institute.
5. You must abide by all university rules and regulations pertaining to behavior.
Will I be safe?
Yes. Campus police are on duty 24 hours per day, seven days per week. In addition, you will be supervised by course mentors, faculty, or resident assistant staff 24 hours per day.
When is the application deadline?
April 1, 2010 is the preferred date. Since we anticipate high demand, we suggest you get your application done before the deadline. We will accept qualified applicants on a first-come-first-served basis.
When will I find out if I am accepted to the summer institute?
Decisions will be made on May 15, 2010. You will receive a letter in the mail before May 20, 2010.
How do I enroll?
If you are not a current student at North Georgia:
Step 1. Apply for admission to North Georgia for Summer 2010. If you have already applied to North Georgia for Fall 2010, contact Undergraduate Admissions at 706-864-1800 or admissions@northgeorgia.edu to update your application to Summer 2010.
Step 2. Receive your acceptance letter for Summer 2010.
Step 3. Fill out the on-line application for the Summer Institute by going into your Banner account:
- From www.northgeorgia.edu, click on Banner at bottom right corner of page. You will be sent to the Banner Welcome screen.
- If you do not know your student id, click on NGCSU-ID# Lookup to obtain it.
- At the Banner Welcome screen, login using your student id.
- Click on STUDENT then click on the link to Application for NGCSU Summer Institute.
Step 4. You will receive a confirmation email on or around April 15 with the decision on your application to the Summer Institute, and the module in which you will participate.
Step 5. Return your Confirmation of Acceptance Form attached to your acceptance letter to the university. You will then receive a housing contract if you are living on campus. If you plan to commute during summer but wish to live on campus and attend classes in the Fall, please contact the Office of Residence Life at (706) 864-1902 as soon as possible. Once housing capacity has been filled for Fall Semester, students will be placed on a housing wait list.
Step 5. Apply for financial aid prior to March 17, 2010. Click here.
Step 6. If you are living on campus, return your housing contract with housing deposit by date given on the letter accompanying the contract.
