Blogging

NOTICE:  The CTLE blog server is currently down for OS upgrade.

Blog sites are hosted on a web server that has database capabilities. You have a choice of hosting services:

  • CTLE hosts blog sites for faculty and staff for university-related content that is non-mission critical. If you are interested in having a blog site on our server, please contact the CTLE staff.
  • Edublogs hosts blog sites for faculty, staff, and students for free on their servers. They may be more limited in template choices, but they have far more functionality. You can check out their site at: http://edublogs.org/.

FAQs About Our Server:

  • What software is used?
    • Wordpress
Easy to install. Easy to use. Written in PHP and runs off a MySQL database. There are a lot of themes and plugins available for this software.
  • What is meant by "non-mission critical?"
    • Anything that does not require 24/7 support. We run our own server in our Center. If it goes down in the middle of the night, it will most likely be the next business day before we get it up and running again.
  • Where are the sites hosted?
    • Most of the NGCSU blog sites are hosted on our own BUGS server located in CTLE, although many are moving to Edublogs for added functionality.
  • Can I upload to the server via my browser?
    • Not at the moment. We have some security issues with uploading through Wordpress to our server. If you need to upload files, check out http://edublogs.org/.
  • What kind of information do I need to provide to get a blog site?
    • Purpose of your blog site
    • Folder name (will be in the URL - i.e., http://ctle.ngcsu.edu/folder_name)
    • What templates/themes you'd like to start with
    • What kind of functionality you looking for
    • When you'd like to have it up and running
    • Email Barbara Seaton with your request.
  • Where do I find templates/themes?
  • How do I get training?
  • Where are there examples of other NGCSU blogs?
  • How do I direct people to my blog?
    • Link to your blog from your department or faculty page
  • Can additional functionality be added to my blog?
    • Yes. There are all kinds of plug-ins available for Wordpress. Some work, some don't. Check with us on what might be available.
  • Are there other places I can set up a blog site?
    • Yes, Edublogs.org.  There are many others as well, but this one is very popular, uses Wordpress, and has lots and lots of functionality.
