Have you ever wondered how the Campus Connection orders books?
1) Faculty
Members submit textbook requests for a specific course with estimated
enrollment. The textbook is indicated required or optional at this time.
2) A Bookstore
staff enters these requests in the textbook system for ordering. The
bookstore estimates a buyback quantity for each book at this time (according
to availability and use on campus). Lab books, workbooks, and books
with new editions are excluded from this buyback list.
3) The
Bookstore sends a "want list" to used textbook wholesalers
for confirmation of availability. A "want list" is a list
of textbook needs (title and quantity) to fulfill professors' requests.
Wholesalers confirm quantity of what books are in stock and will create
a bin for shipment later. A want list is sent numerous times to obtain
as many used copies as available.
4) Bookstore
will order remaining textbook quantities (minus buyback estimates and
want list confirmations) from the publishers.
Great care is taken to supply the correct quantity of textbooks
for a specific course. Unfortunately, the textbook business is very
inexact. Shortages happen because of unexpected high class enrollment
and course demand. The bookstore and faculty work together to fulfill
demand.
BOOK BUYBACK
NGCSU
Campus Connection extends a service to students by providing an opportunity
to sell textbooks back (after the term ends). The bookstore acquires
a wholesaler to provide this service. The wholesaler does two things:
1) Buys
textbooks for the bookstore (the estimated list from the professor
requests).
a. Bookstore pays 1/2 of the new price, regardless if the book
was initially purchased new or used.
b. Bookstore only buys textbooks requested by a professor for a requested
course.
2) Buys
textbooks at a wholesale price.
a. Price is determined by wholesale standards. This includes
supply/demand of a book and existing stock on hand. Wholesalers
have high costs of warehousing and losses (when books come out in
new editions, old editions are worthless).
b. Buys only the latest editions of textbooks. Study guides
and workbooks must be clean (no writing).
