North Georgia nursing students earn top awards at conventionDAHLONEGA – North Georgia College & State University nursing students won six chapter awards, five individual awards and an elected position at the Georgia Association of Nursing Students 53rd Annual Convention in Augusta. The NGCSU chapter of the statewide student organization won the Visionary Award for growth demonstrated over the past year in membership, community service and leadership; the People’s Choice Banner Award, for the chapter’s banner that best depicted the spirit of the association; the Image of Nursing Award, for promoting a positive image of nursing plus demonstrating a significant contribution to the public through community health projects, legislative activism, and health promotion; the Excellence in Community Service Award, recognizing nursing students who give back to the community and a project that promotes health or prevents illness and has a positive impact on the community; a Breakthrough to Nursing Honorable Mention, recognizing the school chapter that impacts the community and the profession of nursing through projects that increase diversity in nursing; and Political Involvement Honorable Mention, for involving nurses and nursing students in the political process. Junior Michelle Tarr-Gentilozzi of Flowery Branch, Ga., was elected to the GANS Nominations & Elections Committee for the North District. The state office appointment is the first for an NGCSU student, said Loretta Delargy, chapter advisor and assistant professor of nursing. Other individual awards and prizes went to Liberty Nelligan of Sautee, Nacoochee, Ga., who won a 7-day Bahama Cruise; Kristin Grant of Dawsonville, Ga., who won a Kaplan NCLEX Review Course; Candice Champion of Canton, Ga., who was awarded a $250 scholarship from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta; Katie Kelly of Dahlonega, who won a $150 scholarship; and Shelby Hall of Dawsonville, the winner of a $100 scholarship. The 25 North Georgia students attending the October conference were involved in focus sessions, networking with nursing students from around Georgia and were recruited by area hospitals. The Georgia Association of Nursing Students exists to maintain standards in the field of nursing and promote professional development among nursing practitioners. |
