The Association of American Colleges and Universities selected teams of faculty and administrators from NGCSU to attend two separate summer institutes.

From May 20 to 25, five representatives from North Georgia participated in the Institute on General Education in Newport, R.I., which included teams from 31 campuses. One of the participants, Dr. Kristi Hislope, assistant professor in language and literature, took away valuable concepts from the institute.

“The institute challenged the notion held by many students and faculty that general education courses are to be taken to get them ‘out of the way,’” Hislope said. “Our team left the institute inspired by the knowledge we have gained and with great hopes that this knowledge will be put to use to benefit our students by offering them the best well rounded education possible.”

Six NGCSU representatives will participate in the Greater Expectations Institute on Campus Leadership for Student Engagement, Inclusion, and Achievement from June 22 to 26. The institute will take place in Burlington, Vt., with 28 campuses represented.

Those who attended the May 20 institute were Vice President for Academic Affairs Linda Roberts-Betsch, Director of Graduate Studies & External Programs Donna Gessell, and faculty members Barbara Howerton, Kristi Hislope and Bob Orwig. They examined current trends in general education, strategies for implementing curricular reforms and refined general education reform plans in the context of North Georgia’s missions.

Participating in the June 22 institute will be Roberts-Betsch, interim Associate Vice President Kathy Sisk, Director of Institutional Research and Planning Charles Hawkins, Appalachian Studies Center Grant Director Alice Sampson, Coordinator of Learning Excellence Irene Kokkala, and student Chris Hawlk. The institute, taking place in Burlington, Vt., with 28 campuses represented, will help campus leaders align institutional purposes, policies, structures and practices as well as advance efforts to develop and assess student achievement through liberal education.
