Dr. John M. Broman received a bachelor of arts in french from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa and his bachelor of music in voice, master of arts in choral conducting; and doctor of musical arts in choral conducting from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. His doctoral essay was entitled Guillaume Bouzignac's Iesu Ubertate Domus Tuae, Quare Fremuerunt Iudaei, Sicut Laetantium, Gaudate et Exultate, and Benedicte Omnia Opera Domini: Performing Editions and Commentary. While at Iowa, Dr. Broman's principal instructors were Dr. Don Moses and Dr. Richard Bloesch. He studied voice with Kathryn Harvey for four years.
Previously, Dr. Broman taught at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota for one year (1976-77) and at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa for fifteen years (1977-92). In addition to directing the NGCSU Singers, Le Belle Voci and Patriot Choir, Dr. Broman has taught conducting and choral methods, music appreciation, music history, and applied voice. During his years at NGCSU, Dr. Broman has received two Presidential Awards for Service (1993 and 1995) at the university's annual spring Honors Banquet and in Fall 2007 was selected as the recipient for the University's Teaching Excellence Award for Relating to Students. Le Belle Voci was selected to perform during the January 2006 In-Service Conference of the Georgia Music Educators Association in Savannah.
Dr. Broman serves Christ the King Lutheran Church in Cumming,
Georgia as its Chancel Choir director. In September 1995,
he was asked to direct the music at the Installation Service
of Bishop-Elect Ron Warren, Southeastern Synod -ELCA, at
St. Phillip's Cathedral in Atlanta. Over 150 vocalists from
20 Lutheran congregations in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee,
and Florida and brass from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
provided special music for the event. Dr. Broman is also
the founder and director of the annual Church Choir Festival
in Cumming, Georgia each spring. Two hundred fifty vocalists
from 10 choirs typically participate in the February festival
each year.
An active vocalist, Dr. Broman performed as a soloist and chorister with the Lanier Singers (now the Lanier Chamber Singers) from 1992-1999 and 2001-2003. For two seasons, from 1999-2001, he was director of this group. The Lanier Chamber Singers were selected to perform in July 2001 in Spivey Hall on the campus of Clayton State College & State University during the summer conference of the Georgia ACDA.
Dr. Broman served the Georgia Chapter of the American Choral
Directors Association as its Repertoire and Standards Chair
for Male Choirs from 1997-2001. Since 1997-2006, he presented
interest sessions entitled "Choral Music by Georgia Composers" as
part of the summer symposium of the Georgia ACDA at Clayton
College & State University in Morrow, GA. Dr. Broman
is in demand as a choral clinician throughout this state.
Dr. Broman has been selected for inclusion in the 5th (1998), 8th (2004) and 9th (2005) editions of Who's Who Among America's Teachers, the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 editions of Who's Who in American Education, and the 2008 edition of Who's Who in America.
