Dr. Lee G. Barrow joined the Fine Arts Department in August of 2001. A native of Atlanta, Barrow received a masters degree in composition from Florida State University and a doctorate in conducting from the University of Miami. His experience includes over 24 years as a college teacher, administrator, and conductor. He began his teaching career at South Georgia College, soon moving on to university positions in Virginia and Oklahoma. Before coming to North Georgia, he chaired the Visual & Performing Arts Department at Broward Community College and taught upper-level theory and conducting for Florida Atlantic University in Fort Lauderdale.
In addition to his teaching and administrative background, Barrow has decades of experience as a church choir director, a musical theater director, and an orchestral conductor. For twelve years he was Associate Conductor of the Broward Symphony Orchestra in Fort Lauderdale, serving as interim Music Director and Conductor during the 1999-2000 season. He has directed or conducted over 100 performances of 28 different musical theater presentations.
Barrow has developed an international reputation as an expert in the identification and correction of errors in editions of major choral works; his research in this area has led to numerous articles as well as a new performing edition of Camille Saint-Saëns Christmas Oratorio. Other creative accomplishments include original compositions, arrangements, madrigal dinner scripts, and nationally syndicated crossword puzzles. He has written four books, including a recent annotated bibliography on Italian composer Ottorino Respighi.
At North Georgia, Barrow teaches music theory, conducting, orchestration, and music technology and directs the Madrigal Singers.
