Getting Around

Students who live on campus or in an apartment nearby find that they can walk to most of the places they need to go. Some students buy a bicycle. Various campus groups sometimes organize shopping trips at the beginning of a semester for those who need supplies from area discount and grocery stores. And many students are happy to assist with a ride when a need comes up.

Some students, though, decide to purchase a car in order to be able to get around more freely. Before you decide to make a major purchase like this, there are a few things you should know.

In order to drive in Georgia, you need a driver's license. You may be able to drive on an international driver's license, but for a number of reasons, many students find that it is more convenient to have a Georgia driver's license. Information is available at http://www.dds.ga.gov/ to help you plan.

It is important to know that you must have a Social Security Number in order to get a driver's license in Georgia. See the ISSO Working page for more information about the SSN. (You must have a job offer in order to get a SSN.)

If you purchase a car, you must also purchase automobile insurance in order to legally operate the car.
