Questions & Answers
Why should I schedule an appointment to see an Academic Advisor?
Academic advising is an ongoing process rather than a single or isolated appointment or event. Meeting with an advisor can help you to define your academic or career goals and help you to choose classes.
NGCSU also has a rule that you must meet with an advisor if you have less than 45 earned hours in order to receive your alternate pin number. Without this number, you will be unable to register during registration.
What happens if I sign up for less than 12 hours credit?
A student who carries fewer than 12 credits is a part-time student. This part-time status could reduce the student's financial aid package, interrupt scholarships and have an impact on some vehicle and medical insurance policies.
When should a student repeat a course?
A student should repeat "F" grades and "D" grades when the student is attempting to raise his/her quality point average. The student should try to repeat "D" or "F" courses by the next semester. When a course is repeated, only the most recent grade counts in the overall quality point average. All attempts to complete the course, however, are still recorded on the student's transcript.
How do I declare / change my major ?
All students, once enrolled at NGCSU, can change their major online in BANNER.
New students that have not enrolled in courses at NGCSU, need to contact the Admissions Office, Cadet Recruiting Office or Graduate Admissions to change their major.
What is the Regents' Skills Test?
The Regents' Skills Test was implemented by the University System to ensure that students receiving degrees from its institutions possess certain minimum skills of reading and writing. Since 1972, passing both the Reading and Writing portions of the Regents' test has been a requirement for all students pursuing undergraduate degrees.
Each student is expected to take and successfully pass the Regents' Test before 45 hours of credit. Students who already have earned a Bachelor's degree (or higher) are exempted from the Regents' Test requirement.
The test consist of a one-hour reading test and a one-hour essay and is given once a semester.
