How to automatically backup your office PC

IIT has developed a procedure to assist users with backing up their PCs. Please follow the directions below before getting a new PC, if your PC is going to be reimaged or to do a routine backup. This process runs automatically and will back up the following files and folders.

This program will not backup documents, pictures, etc. that have not been saved within the "My Documents" folder. If you have saved files outside of "My Documents," we urge you to copy and paste them into "My Documents."

This process produces a single compressed and encrypted file that will be created on a network drive and identified by your username. The file cannot be read by other users.

You may repeat this process as often as necessary. Your backup file will be overwritten each time.

Before beginning the backup procedure, please check the following: Make sure you have logged into Novell on your PC with your username Move any files and folders that you want backed up to the "My Documents" folder Backup Firefox bookmarks    -- open Firefox    -- select Bookmarks    -- select Manage Bookmarks    -- select File --> Export    -- click on 'My Documents' on the left    -- click Save

NOTE: If you have more than one machine, you will only be able to backup one of them.

GETTING STARTED

Choose one below:

1. Directions for PCs running Windows XP:

Go to Start --> Programs --> ZENworks 6.5 Desktop Management --> Application Window Double-click on BackupPC located in the right side of the window

The process will start automatically and you should see a pop-up window that says "Personality Migration." This program may take several minutes depending on how much data you are backing up.

NOTE: To restore your files to your new or reimaged computer, repeat the process above but select "RestorePC" instead of "BackupPC."

2. Directions for PCs running Windows 2K or PCs that do not have ZENworks for Desktops installed:

Double-click on My Computer Double-click on Public on 'Campus\Data' (L:) Double-click on BackupPC

A "Novell ZENworks 6.5 Personality Migration" window will pop-up and then a "Migrating the System" window will pop-up and the backup process will begin. This program may take several minutes depending on how much data you are backing up. The window will close when the process is completed.

NOTE: To restore your files to your new or reimaged computer, repeat the process above but select "RestorePC" instead of "BackupPC."
