Grade Point Average

NGCSU and other University System schools use a 4-point grade scale. Here at NGCSU, the overall GPA includes both institutional and transfer work. For each of the grades below, the grade carries quality point weights.
GradeQuality Points
A-Excellent4
B-Good3
C-Satisfactory2
D-Passing1
F-Failure0
WF-Withdrew Failing0

Grade Point Averages are calculated at the end of each term after grades have been processed and after any grade has been updated or changed. Further information about grades given for coursework is available in the Undergraduate Bulletin. Courses that receive certain grades or grade codes cannot be used towards graduation. For more information, check the Grade Codes notes from the Registrar's office.

How to Calculate a GPA
The Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated by dividing the number of hours scheduled in all courses attempted in which a grade of A, B, C, D, F or WF has been received into the number of quality points earned on those hours scheduled.

For example, a student had the following schedule. She determined the total number of quality points and then determined the GPA.
Course-Hours-Grade Quality Points for the Class
ENGL 1101-3-A3*4=12
MATH 2450-4-C4*2=8
BIOL 1010-3-B3*3=9
BIOL 1010L-1-A1*4=4
PSYC 1101-3-B3*3=9
Total Hours = 14Total Quality Points = 42

Sum of Quality Points / Total Number of Hours = GPA
42 / 14 = 3.0

Repeated Coursework
If a student repeats a course, only the grade of the most recent attempt of the course is used for the purpose of calculating the GPA. This is true even if the second attempt is lower than previous attempts.

On the student's transcript previous attempts are marked with an 'E' to indicate their exclusion from GPA calculations. Course grades marked with an 'I' are included. For students whose previous attempts at a course were from another institution, the excluded grade is marked with a grade that includes a '$' symbol. These excluded courses must not be used towards graduation.

Grade Reports
Grade reports are available online to students. These reports are only mailed to the student in the case of a grade change. Instructions are available to students to access these grades online. However, upon a student's request, the Registrar's office will mail grades to the student.

Advisors can access a student's transcript via Banner following these instructions.
