CJAG Meeting Minutes
Jasmine Room, Westin Resort
Hilton Head, SC
2/23/01
The annual CJAG business meeting was called to order at 5:00 PM by Leo
Downing, CJAG President 2000-2001.
1. 2002 Program
The 2002 program was finalized. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the GPSA at the Mulberry Inn, Savannah, Georgia from 1/31-2/2. The decision was made to offer four CJ panels. The chairs and topic of each panel are as follows.
Leo Downing: general CJ papers
Hil Harper: general CJ papers
*Eugene Bouley: panel for graduate and undergraduate papers
Steve Engel: panel dealing with issues related to CJ education
* Please note that the deadline for abstracts will be in September so papers for the student panel should be chosen from student projects this Spring or last Fall semester.
Snail mail and email addresses for each of the Chairs can be found on the CJAG web site: http://www.ngcsu.edu/CJAG/cjmeet.htm
A formal call for papers will be made as soon as arrangements with the
GPSA are made.
2. Growth
Discussions focused on ways to increase membership and the importance
of maintaining an independent academic organization.
3. CJAG website: http://www.ngcsu.edu/CJAG/cjag.htm
Several improvements have been made in the web site. Faculty were urged
to make use of the information provided.
4. CJ Academic meetings
The ASC will meet in Atlanta, November 11/7-11/11 and the SCJA will meet in Baton Rouge, September 9/26-9/29.
5. Election of Officers for 2002-2003
Leo Downing was elected President for the 2002-2003 term.
6. Minutes
The meeting minutes from the Criminal Justice Academic Advisory Committee
were reviewed and discussed.
7. CJ books distributors
The suggestion was made that the book distributors need to be notified
that CJAG will be meeting jointly with the GPSA. Several of the book publishers
were unaware of the CJAG meeting and had no criminal justice texts.
8. Alternative Dispute Resolution
The BOR has been advocating the use of ADR for a number of years. With
the growing use of ADR procedures in the cj system this seems an ideal
opportunity for criminal justice faculty members to involve themselves
in a learning experience while becoming more active in their campus community.
9. Course prefix
A short discussion centered around the common USG prefix for criminal
justice courses: CRJU. This prefix was adopted by a vote of the CJ Academic
Advisory Committee several years ago at the request of the BOR for all
disciplines to adopt a common prefix. At this time several schools are
still not using the criminal justice prefix (though they are using the
the common prefix adopted by other disciplines). Other than the State University
of West Georgia, which awards a Criminology degree, no reason seemed to
justify the lack of uniformity. Further exploration of the matter will
follow.
10. Meeting was adjourned at 6:00 PM. Hil Harper, Valdosta State University, assumed the duties as President of CJAG.
