About the Program
The Summer Language Institute in Mandarin Chinese at North Georgia offers a challenging academic experience to college students interested in accelerating their language learning through an intensive and dynamic program of study. This rigorous, multi-dimensional program of language study is designed for ambitious and serious students.
Although the program is intensive and challenging, the learning activities are designed to be fun and engaging within the context of learning Chinese through substantial interaction between the students and the native-speaking faculty and teaching assistants as well amongst the participants themselves.
In addition to classroom instruction, participants will enjoy a number of extra-curricular activities, including sports, cooking, calligraphy, a white-water trip, and a visit to a Chinese market.
Using proven techniques and methods employed by such highly regarded institutions as the Defense Language Institute (with which North Georgia has an articulation agreement), Middlebury College, and Concordia Language Villages, the Summer Language Institute in Mandarin Chinese at North Georgia will move students through the equivalent of three traditional semesters, equaling 9 credit hours.

Benefits of Attending
Participants will get a serious head start on their language learning, whether they attend North Georgia or not. Indeed, completion of this program will take care of the modern language requirement all North Georgia students must complete in the core curriculum, and it will fulfill nearly all language requirements for any degree program at the university. (Some non-language majors require courses through 2001 level instruction.)
Moreover, completion of this program will give students an excellent start toward completing a minor in Chinese. North Georgia also has a student-exchange agreement with Tsinghua University located in Beijing. SLI participants will be given priority consideration for participation in this exchange.

Location
The language institute will be held on the campus of North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega, Georgia. The Dahlonega area was the location of the first major U.S. gold rush in 1828.
Dahlonega's commercial district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is home to many wonderful restaurants and unique shopping opportunities. Major wineries have also discovered the rich, fertile hillsides of Lumpkin County.
