North Georgia College & State University educates and equips informed, responsible and engaged citizens prepared to lead, serve and grow on behalf of their communities and country. As the only four-year public institution of higher education in northeast Georgia, the university combines a well-rounded liberal arts education with superior leadership experiences and education.

The only four-year, coeducational, liberal arts, public institution among the six Senior Military Colleges in the nation, the university is designated by the Board of Regents and the General Assembly as The Military College of Georgia as well as a Leadership Institution for civilian and military students. Although the majority of its almost 5,000 enrolled students are not members of the award-winning Corps of Cadets, the residential campus community is influenced by military values, including respect, responsibility and service to others. During spring and fall semesters, the character of North Georgia is distinguished by approximately 700 cadets wearing military uniforms in classrooms and laboratories, rappelling down walls, conducting tactical exercises, or parading on the drill field in the center of the scenic campus. At 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., traffic stops and pedestrians turn toward the campus memorial as the bugle marks time-honored ceremonies to raise and lower the flags. The university’s rich military history is enhanced by more than three dozen generals among its alumni.

Founded in 1873, North Georgia is the second oldest public institution of higher education in the state and the first to enroll and graduate women. Academically, North Georgia’s student graduation rates are consistently among the top three in the University System of Georgia. In the schools of Arts & Letters, Business, Education, and Science & Health Professions, North Georgia students pursue undergraduate degrees in 50 fields, including teacher education, business administration, computer science, nursing, fine arts, humanities, biology, chemistry and social sciences. Master's degrees are offered in teacher education, public administration, business, nursing and community counseling. An education specialist degree in teacher leadership is a nationally recognized graduate program. As a member of the Medical College of Georgia Doctorate of Physical Therapy Consortium, North Georgia offers a fully accredited entry-level program leading to the doctoral degree from MCG.

Located about an hour north of Atlanta, North Georgia’s 120-acre main campus is readily recognized by the gold-covered steeple of the administration building, Price Memorial Hall, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a landmark of Dahlonega. Known widely for its historic town square surrounded by artisan galleries, workshops, retail stores, restaurants and bistros, the picturesque community is the home of the first major gold rush in the nation and a popular tourist attraction in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. With stunning waterfalls surrounded by lush forests, the region draws visitors who enjoy hiking, mountain climbing, rafting, canoeing and camping.

More than 600 acres in adjacent or nearby parks and forests are owned by the university and are frequently used as outdoor laboratories for teaching and research. North Georgia classes also are available at the University Center of Gainesville State College and at locations in Forsyth County.

Students participate in numerous co-curricular organizations, including honor societies, cadet clubs, performance and publication groups, sororities, fraternities, and intramural sports. North Georgia competes in intercollegiate athletics in the NCAA Division II Peach Belt Conference. 

The institution was founded in 1873 as North Georgia Agricultural College, renamed North Georgia College in 1929 and became North Georgia College & State University in 1996.

The military traditions and atmosphere at NGCSU are hard to quantify. Perhaps they were best described by Colonel (US Army, Retired) Dandridge Malone in his article, Officer Accessions and the Natural State, when he wrote, "They (referring to the North Georgia College cadets) just looked, acted and talked like soldiers. Against the contextual backdrop of the West Pointer and the ROTC student, these young men stood out in a striking way. When they did things Army, it was just, by God, 'natural'. Not forced, not awkward ...natural."
