WHAT ARE WE?

     The Lambda of Georgia Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa recognizes NGCSU students who have distinguished themselves as scholars of sociology.  Once a year--at the Honor Societies' Initiation Banquet on Honors Day in April--our chapter initiates students who have qualified for membership.  The chapter is an affiliate of NGCSU's Council of Honor Societies.

WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP?

     An undergraduate is eligible if he is a junior or senior, has a cumulative GPA of 3.0, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in sociology courses (at least four such courses taken in residence), and is in the top 35 percent of his class across the university.

     A graduate student is eligible if she has completed 9 graduate credits in sociology in residence with a minimum GPA in those courses of 3.6, a minimum GPA of 3.6 for graduate work at all institutions, and a GPA of 3.6 for graduate work at NGCSU.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF ALPHA KAPPA DELTA?

       Dr. Emory S. Bogardus, founder (in 1915) of the University of Southern California Department of Sociology (one of the earliest sociology departments anywhere), founded Alpha Kappa Delta in 1920 for the purposes of stimulating scholarship and promoting the scientific study of society.  He created the honor society by gathering together a group of 14 faculty and graduate students for the purpose of discussing research methods and findings, and promoting scholarly writing.  Four years later, in 1924, the United Chapters of Alpha Kappa Delta were formed.  The charter members included the University of Southern California, represented by Dr. Bogardus, Wisconsin, Northwestern, and the University of Kansas.  Bogardus’s rationale for establishing this organization was to provide a forum for student and faculty interchange.  His endeavor paved the way for what has become an international organization dedicated to promoting, facilitating, and recognizing academic scholarship.  As we enter the 21st century, Alpha Kappa Delta is an integral part of many sociology programs and is proud to acknowledge that, in the past eight decades, over 80,000 scholars have been initiated into the society.  More than 490 chapters have been chartered in the United States, Canada, China, Finland, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Singapore.

HOW IS ALPHA KAPPA DELTA ORGANIZED?

     Alpha Kappa Delta is governed by an international council, consisting of the international president, president-elect, vice president, secretary-treasurer, past president, journal editor, representative to the national Association of College Honor Societies, and 11 regional chancellors.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE LAMBDA OF GEORGIA CHAPTER?

     Alpha Kappa Delta was brought to North Georgia College & State University in 2000 by Dr. J. Marvin Pippert, associate professor of sociology and head of the Department of Psychology and Sociology, who was initiated as a graduate student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1977, and Dr. Leo C. Downing Jr., professor of criminal justice and sociology and head of the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice, who was initiated as an undergraduate at Oklahoma State University in 1980.  The Lambda of Georgia Chapter was established on May 17, 2000.
