WHAT ARE WE?
The Xi Kappa Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha recognizes undergraduate and graduate NGCSU students who have distinguished themselves as scholars of political science. Once a year--at the Honor Societies' Initiation Banquet on Honors Day in April--our chapter initiates students who have qualified for membership.
WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP?
An undergraduate is eligible if he has completed 60 credits (at least 20 of which must have been earned in residence at NGCSU), at least 15 credits in political science, and at least 9 upper-division credits in political science earned in residence. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 at all institutions, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 at NGCSU, and a GPA of 3.0 in political science are minimum requirements.
A graduate student is eligible if she has completed 18 graduate credits in political science in residence with a GPA of at least 3.75.
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF PI SIGMA ALPHA?
Pi Sigma Alpha was founded in 1920 at the University of Texas. Prof. C. Perry Patterson was an early leader of that chapter and served as Pi Sigma Alpha's national president from 1920 to 1932. It currently has chapters at 500 colleges and universities. For more information about Pi Sigma Alpha, visit the Pi Sigma Alpha home page.
HOW IS PI SIGMA ALPHA ORGANIZED?
Pi Sigma Alpha is governed by an executive council, consisting of the current officers--i.e., the president, president-elect, executive director, and newsletter editor--and the three most recent past presidents and 12 members elected by the membership. Based on number of chapters, Pi Sigma Alpha is the third largest affiliate of the national Association of College Honor Societies with 500 chapters.
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE XI KAPPA CHAPTER?
Pi Sigma Alpha was brought to North Georgia College in 1983 by Dr. Brian M. Murphy, professor of political science, who was initiated as a charter member of the new chapter at NGC. After a period of inactivity, the chapter was reactivated by Dr. Barry D. Friedman, professor of political science, who was initiated into Pi Sigma Alpha while a graduate student at the University of Connecticut in 1985.
Later in 1994, Dr. Friedman, along with Dr. Linda B. August, associate professor of sociology, proposed to the officers of the college's other honor societies that a coordinating council of honor societies should be established. On February 14, 1995, the Council of Honor Societies was established; the Xi Kappa Chapter became one of the six charter members of the council. The Council of Honor Societies hosts NGCSU's annual Honor Societies' Initiation Banquet on Honors Day in April. Visit the home page of the Council of Honor Societies for more information.

Dr. Friedman currently serves as a member of the society's national Executive Council.
