NGCSU'S HONOR SOCIETIES DONATE $2000 TO ACTIVATE 2-1-1 HELP LINE IN LUMPKIN COUNTY

DAHLONEGA, Ga., April 15, 2008 -- North Georgia College & State University's honor societies have donated $2000 to activate Lumpkin County's new 2-1-1 help line.  Once the 2-1-1 line goes into service on July 7, a Lumpkin County resident will be able to dial the three-digit number in order to reach an operator who will refer the caller to an agency that will help with chronic health problems, financial problems requiring help with food or shelter, or other needs for social services.

The honor societies' donation will fully subsidize the process of linking the county's telephone exchanges with the 2-1-1 line, Dr. Donna A. Gessell, a council member of the Healthy Lumpkin Community Partnership and faculty secretary of the university's Omicron Delta Kappa chapter, explained.  "This resource will support the quality of life of our neighbors.  The 2-1-1 line will help social-service and health-care providers, as well as members of the community," added Gessell, who is also the university's executive director of regional engagement.

At the Honor Societies' Initiation Banquet on April 15, representatives of the honor societies presented the donation to Sharon Thomason of the United Way for Lumpkin County.  (See photograph.)  NGCSU's chapters of Alpha Kappa Delta, sociology; Alpha Phi Sigma, criminal justice; Beta Gamma Sigma, business administration; Omicron Delta Kappa, leadership; Phi Eta Sigma, freshmen; Phi Kappa Phi, interdisciplinary; Pi Delta Phi, French; Pi Gamma Mu, social sciences; Pi Sigma Alpha, political science; Psi Chi, psychology; and Sigma Theta Tau, nursing, provided funding for the donation.  The Council of Honor Societies coordinated the project and provided funding as well.

"Our Phi Kappa Phi chapter believes in reaching out to the community and making it stronger," said Dr. Alice V. Sampson, the chapter's president and the director of the university's Appalachian Studies Center.  "We hope that the 2-1-1 line will provide help and comfort to Lumpkin County residents when they need it most."

Here is a very gracious message written by Dr. Dorothy I. Mitstifer, executive director of the national Association of College Honor Societies, to honor-society leaders around the country:

"North Georgia College & State University's honor societies collaborate in a Council of Honor Societies.  See News link on the ACHS Web site for details of the 2008 project.  Congratulations to the chapters of nine of our honor societies.  Barry Friedman, Professor of Political Science, is the energy behind the Council.  Perhaps some of the rest of us can clone Barry for similar activities on other campuses.

     "Congratulations to all.

                                                                     "Dorothy"
