NGCSU MEN EDGE PAST CLAYTON STATE FOR THIRD PLACE AND WOMEN FINISH FOURTH IN PRE-CONFERENCE CLASSIC

Columbus, GAAlan Schmitz and the Saints finished in third place with 85 points, edging out rival and defending Peach Belt champion Clayton State by two points, while Liz Dunn led the Lady Saints to fourth place finish in today’s Pre-Conference Classic hosted by Columbus State.

Schmitz led the way for North Georgia for the third straight week with a time of 28:13.15 that placed him in 13th place overall. Josh Kerzie finished in 20th place with a time of 29:43.95, and David Beall finished two spots behind Kerzie with a time of 29:57.49. Rounding out the top five for the Saints was Robert Murray and Tyler Jordan who finished in 30:29.14 and 31:22.02 respectively.

Crossing the line first in the Men’s 8K race was West Florida senior Michael Padilla in a time of 25:20.88. West Florida finished first in the team standings as well with 20 points and an average time of 26:51.02. Columbus State finished second with 43 points.

Dunn led Saints in the women’s race with a 13th place finish good for her best time of the season at 20:37.64. Hannah Dugger finished two spots behind Dunn with her personal best time of 20:57.16, and Emmy Lawalin finished right on her heels in a time of 21:02.50. Finishing fourth was Beatrice Nelligan in 30th place in a time of 22:22.07, and the fifth spot on the team belonged to Candace Chumley in 33rd place with a time of 22:51.59. The Lady Saints compiled 105 points and an average time of 21:34.20 which was good for fourth place in the team standings.

Winning the Women’s race was Clayton State junior Allison Kreutzer who finished in a time of 18:12.53. Teammate Angela Cobb finished in second with a time of 18:12.78, but West Florida took places four through nine to take the women’s race with only 30 points. Clayton State and Columbus State finished second and third in the standings with 56 and 78 points respectively.

North Georgia will return to action at the Great American XC Festival in Birmingham, Alabama on September 23, 2006 with the men running at 12:10 pm and the women following at 12:45 pm.
