SAINTS CROSS COUNTRY PREFORMS WELL ON LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN
Saints Men Win Second Place Overall

Lookout Mountain, Ga. - The North Georgia College & State University men's team took second place overall on a rainy Saturday morning in the Mountain Top Classic hosted by Covenant College. The Saints women's team worked hard through the tough conditions and finished ninth overall.

Saturday's race marked the first time in four years that the Saints cross country team had placed in the top three of a meet. NCAA Division II member Carson-Newman College won the meet and defeated the North Georgia men by only one point.

Leading the Saints once again was junior Kelly Parr (Maysville, Ga.) who finished the 8k course in 29:13 and in eighth place overall and sophomore Bryan Harris (Cleveland, Ga.) took 10th place overall with a time of 29:19. Valuable points were scored by junior Matt Temples (Cumming, Ga.) and freshman Matthew Ueltzen (Blairsville, Ga.) who finished in 15th and 16th overall with times of 29:57 and 30:02. Racing to the finish for the final points position was freshman Alan Schmitz (Warner Robins, Ga.) and sophomore Joseph Register (Freeport, Fla.). Schmitz crossed the line in 25th place with a time of 30:31 followed by Register in 27th place with a time of 30:39. Completing the effort of the men's team was sophomore Tommy Stapleton (Cleveland, Ga.), 33:33, sophomore Jason Geiger (Sugar Hill, Ga.), 35:45, and freshman Alan Pesti (Athens, Ga.), 38:21.

The men's race was won by Scott Lowe in a time of 27:58, followed by Eric Malkowski of Carson-Newman College and Jordan Turner of Reinhardt College in times of 28:20 and 28:24.

In the women's race junior Irina Watkins (Varkaus, Finland) took third place overall in a time of 19:24 in the women's 5k race. Junior Anna Roller (Commerce, Ga.) and sophomore Maricela Jacobo (Dalton, Ga.) took 40th and 41st place in times of 24:26 and 24:28. Freshman Tara Alexander (Grayson, Ga.) ran well and finished in 47th place overall in a time of 25:13. Finishing in 66th and 68th place was junior Anna Rau (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and freshman Trish Faulkner (Kennesaw, Ga.) in times of 28:15 and 28:56.

Savannah College of Art and Design won the women's overall title and Phyllis Tuggle of Agnes Scott College won the individual race in a time of 18:41.

The Saints next race is this Thursday at Erskine College in Due West, S.C. for the Erskine Invitational. The women's race is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm with the men to follow at 4:45 pm.
