LADY SAINTS FALL IN REGULAR-SEASON FINALE
Lady Saints will be sixth-seed in PBC Tournament
Greenwood, SC - Chrissie Wallace scored four minutes into the first overtime to give Lander a 1-0 upset victory over North Georgia College & State University here Saturday afternoon.
North Georgia outshot Lander 25-8, but the loss drops the Lady Saints to the sixth seed in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference Tournament.
Ayana Reid crossed the ball to Wallace in front of the goal in the overtime period. Wallace redirected the ball with her head into the goal, setting off a wild celebration by the Bearcats. It was her third goal of the season.
Abrahamsen made her first big play five minutes into the match. North Georgia’s Jessica Williams took a shot that was knocked down by Rachael Hine. After a scramble, the ball was headed into the net when Abrahamsen stepped into the goal and stopped the ball before it crossed the line. The Lady Bearcats survived that flurry and the game settled down into a scoreless first half.
Lander got through another North Georgia flurry early in the second half with Hine coming up big with some saves.
The Lady Bearcats had a big scoring chance with 26 minutes left in regulation when North Georgia goalkeeper Leigha Terry stopped a high, hard shot by Wade. The deflection came to Burnette, whose shot narrowly missed. A few minutes later, Wallace’s pass to Opitz nearly produced a goal. But Terry made the stop.
Abrahamsen made another stop inside the goal with 11:22 left when a North Georgia shot got behind Hine, preserving the shutout that would be clinched by Wallace’s game-winning goal.
Hine was brilliant in goal, producing her second shutout of the season. The sophomore had 13 saves, and also came out and halted several breakaway pass attempts. Terry had six saves for the Saints. North Georgia had a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
North Georgia (8-7-2, 3-5-1 PBC) will travel to third-seeded Clayton State on Wednesday.
