CARTER COMES OFF THE BENCH TO LEAD LADY SAINTS
Carter scores early, Cappy records hat trick
Spartanburg, SC - Nina Carter provided explosiveness off the bench and Lauren Cappy added the fire for the Lady Saints with a pair of goals, leading the Lady Saints to a 5-0 victory over Converse College in non-conference action Tuesday evening.
Nina Carter finally woke the Lady Saints up late in the first half, less then two minutes after being subbed in the game. Carter cleared the ball to the right flank to midfielder Katie Caughell, who in turn crossed the ball back into the box. Carter was there to finish with a header and give the Lady Saints a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.
Carter almost struck again in the 28th minute and then again in the 33rd minute. In the 28th minute, she gave a through ball to Lauren Hughes who had the ball knocked away at the last minute. In the 33rd minute, Carter almost finished another header as she barely sent the ball over the crossbar and out of bounds.
Converse had a chance to equalize the game in the 38th minute when Sarah Schiff found a streaking Ashley Carry. Carry headed the ball of the post and out of bounds.
Though only leading 1-0 at the intermission, the Lady Saints were dominating the All-Stars in every other category in the game. The Lady Saints got 17 shots off with 10 shots on goal, with four corner kicks.
After a less-than-impressive performance in the first half, the Lady Saints came out and dominated the All-Stars in the second half.
The Lady Saints had their chances in the second half, missing five opportunities in front of net -- a few of which were saved by Converse goalkeeper Kaitlyn Price. The Lady Saints' Kelsey Webb, Lauren Cappy and Carter all had chances on goal in the first five minutes but were either stifled by the All-Stars goalkeeper or hit the post.
The Lady Saints got their second goal of the game in the 60th minute when Kelly Curran cleared the ball from the back leading to a misplay by the All-Stars. Cappy was the beneficiary of the misplay as a defender ran into the goalkeeper, Price, leading to Cappy being able to tap the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead.
North Georgia got another chance on goal in the 64th minute, but Erin Cummings was stopped by Price on a penalty kick to keep the score at 2-0.
The Lady Saints were able to get their third in the 70th minute when Kelly Orear crossed the ball from the left side. Although Orear's cross looked to be going in the goal, Cappy was able to put away her second goal of the game heading the ball into the net for a 3-0 lead.
Webb added to the Lady Saints lead after the ball crossed the goal mouth two times. Webb had her first attempt stopped by Price, but was able to score when the ball bounced back to her in the 75th minute, after a pass from Hughes.
Converse had an opportunity on goal in the 81st minute, but Sam Chapman's attempt went wide right. The opportunity was set-up after an obstruction call on Sarah Hales in the box.
Cappy recorded the hat trick with just two minutes remaining on the clock when she finished off a Caughell pass for a 5-0 advantage.
Leigha Terry recorded the shutout in goal, in a game in which the Lady Saints out-shot Converse 43-6. The Lady Saints recorded 24 shots on goal, leading to 20 saves by Price.
North Georgia (5-4-1, 2-2-0 PBC) returns to action Thursday night at 6 pm, hosting Anderson University at the NGCSU Soccer Complex.
