LADY COUGARS BLANK NORTH GEORGIA IN PBC MATCH

Columbus, Ga. - Kellie Myles punched in a shot at the 63:30 mark Wednesday for what proved the be the game-winning goal as Columbus State welcomed North Georgia to the Peach Belt Conference with a 2-0 home win. Katherine Atwater added the other CSU goal with just over five minutes remaining to give the Lady Cougars some insurance.

The two squads played to a scoreless tie in the first half, thanks mainly to the solid play of Saints goalkeeper Mary Canon-Williams. The sophomore keeper turned back six shots in the first half and finished with 13 saves in the game. CSU kept the pressure on all day, out-shooting the visitors 22-5 in the contest with 15 of those shots directly on goal.

The Lady Cougars finally broke through when Sam Bird fed a long pass into the box that actually almost went in the left side of the net.The ball caromed off the goalpost and right to Myles, who chipped it past Canon-Williams for the 1-0 lead. Atwater's goal came on a nice individual effort as she controlled a loose ball on the left side, set herself up and drove a liner past Canon-Williams and just inside the far post for the insurance score. For Myles, the goal was her third of the season, while Atwater's was her second.

CSU got a great effort from a pair of goalkeepers in the game as well, as starter Monica Sanchez and backup Megan Robey split the game to share the shutout. Sanchez had a pair of saves in the first half, while Robey stopped three shots in the second half.

The win moves CSU back to the .500 mark both overall and in PBC play. The Lady Cougars are 4-4 overall and are now 1-1 in PBC play. The Saints fall to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in PBC play.

North Georgia returns home to face PBC opponent Lander on Saturday, while CSU steps out of the conference and out of Division II as they will travel to Montgomery, AL, to face Alabama State on Saturday at 4 PM.
