LADY SAINTS SEASON ENDS WITH 5-0 LOSS TO BERRY
MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Five different Lady Vikings scored and three Berry goalkeepers combined for a shutout as No. 15 Berry defeated North Georgia 5-0 in an NAIA Region XIII women's soccer tournament match at a soggy Ford Soccer Field in Mount Berry Tuesday.
Berry (15-5-1) needed less than 12 minutes to score its first goal, as Maren Henseler headed in a cross from Jenny Paterson 11:37 into the match. Berry would score twice more before halftime, with Paterson scoring on a pair of assists from Henseler and Lindsey Duke, and Duke firing a rocket past North Georgia starting goalkeeper Mary Canon Williams from approximately 40 yards out.
It took a while for the Lady Vikings to score in the second half, but Lea Xenakis gave Berry a four-goal advantage at the 68:47 mark when she kicked in a cross from Courtney Bond. Lisa Lifton rounded out the scoring in the 75th minute after accepting a pass from Haley Burke.
The victory moves Berry into the regional semifinal Saturday at Ford Soccer Field, however the time of the match and the opponent have not yet been determined.
The Lady Vikings found out following the match that they moved up three spots in the NAIA national poll after starting the day ranked 18th. The poll is the final ranking released in 2004.
North Georgia ends its season with a 12-8-2 overall record.
