FOUR GAMES IN SEVEN DAYS PROVES TOO MUCH FOR LADY SAINTS
Porsha White scores career-high 28 points in loss to USC Upstate
Spartanburg, S.C. – Four games in seven days proved too much for the North Georgia College & State University Lady Saints, as they fell 94-86 to USC Upstate in Peach Belt Conference action Wednesday evening.
Just two days removed from a Peach Belt Conference game against UNC Pembroke, the Lady Saints took to the road to face a USC Upstate team that was off since Saturday.
The Lady Saints got out to an early 17-5 lead before USC Upstate tied the game at 26-26 with 5:37 to play in the first half. However, North Georgia went on a 10-2 run over the next 2:21 to take a 36-28 lead. Porsha White connected on one-of-two free throws with 5:23 to play in the half to give North Georgia a 27-26 lead. Junior Megan Huffman extended the lead to three with 4:44 remaining as she connected on two free throws. Following a lay-up by the Lady Spartans Ketorria Smith, North Georgia answered with a White lay-up to extend the lead back to three at 31-28 with 4:08 remaining in the half. The freshman hit a six-footer on the next trip down the floor to extend the lead to five at 33-28 with 3:49 to play. Huffman finished off the run with a three-pointer to extend the lead to 36-28 with 3:16 to play in the half.
The second half was a different story as USC Upstate came out running, taking a 20-point lead (92-72) with 2:59 remaining in the contest. However, the Lady Saints battle until the final horn. They actually wenty on a 12-0 over 1:58 in the second half to trim the lead to the final margin of eight.
Huffman connected on two free throws with 2:12 remaining to trim the lead to 94-76 with 2:12 to play, before White hit on one-of-two free throws with 1:43 remaining to trim the lead to 94-77. Sophomore point guard Lindsey Kitchens converted a three-point play the hard way, a fastbreak lay-up and free throw, to trim the lead 94-80 with 1:23 to play. White and Kitchens combined for the final six points for the Lady Saints over the next 1:09.
North Georgia shot 48.3 (29-for-60) percent from the floor, while hitting on 27.8 (5-for-18) percent from behind the arc. They also connected on 76.7 (23-for-30) percent of their free throws.
USC Upstate shot 57.8 (37-for-64) percent from the floor, and 56.3 (9-for-16) percent from behind the arc. They also shot 52.4 (11-for-21) percent from the free throw line.
Smith led USC Upstate (8-8, 3-2 PBC) with 30 points on 12-for-15 shooting from the floor. She also connected on 4-of-6 three-pointers. Danielle Edwards added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Ebony Johnson finished with 11 points.
White led North Georgia with a career-high 28 points (11-for-19 shooting) and eight rebounds. Huffman added 20 points (5-for-11 shooting from the floor, 8-for-10 shooting from the free throw line). Syretha Marble added 16 points (5-of-9 shooting) in the loss.
North Georgia (8-8, 3-3 PBC) returns to action Saturday hosting Augusta State University at Memorial Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m., with all of the homecoming festivities beginning at 1:25 pm.
