The Lady Saints (9-3, 5-0) stifled the Spartans (5-6, 2-2) attack for the first 20 minutes of play as they came out shooting 50% (15-for-30) from the field and limiting Upstate to 32% (9-for-28). North Georgia established a six point lead six minutes into the game, but the Spartans were able to cut the lead to 11-9 off of a made free throw from junior forward Shanita Porter with 11:29 to go in the half. The Lady Saints then went on an 11-2 run over the next five minutes to go up by double-digits. By halftime, North Georgia was up 42-27 over Upstate and looked to close out the game. Senior guard Lindsey Huffman led the Lady Saints attack with 10 points and four assists in the first half.
The second half saw North Georgia build on its 15-point halftime lead thanks in large part to the stellar play of senior guard Katie Williamson. Williamson scored 17 points in the second half, shooting 8-for-13 from the field and 4-for-7 from behind the arc. Upstate senior center Yakeeshia Ross scored a team high 15 points in 24 minutes of work, but was not able to surge the Spartans past the Lady Saints.
Williamson ended the game with 23 points and four rebounds followed by Huffman who added 13 points and a game high six assists. Sister Megan Huffman added 10 points in the win for North Georgia.
The Spartans struggled from the field, shooting 30% (17-for-57) and 10% (1-for-10) from behind the arc. The Lady Saints sizzled from the field, shooting 48% (33-for-69) and 42% (11-for-26) from 3-point land. Both teams struggled at the line, with North Georgia hitting only 15-of-23 (65%) shots and Upstate going 18-for-26 (69%) from the charity stripe.
On Wednesday evening, the Lady Saints will battle Columbus State University for the NGCSU Spirit Night. The action begins at 5:30 p.m. in Memorial Gymnasium. Upstate will take on Georgia College & State University Wednesday at home. |
