With the win, North Georgia ties the record for most consecutive wins to begin a season in the last 10 years. It ties the 2001-2002 Lady Saints which won seven games to begin the season and finished with a 32-4 overall record.
The Lady Saints (7-0, 3-0) ran into the locker room after finishing the first half on a 13-3 run in the final five minutes to go up 44-32 over the Lady Braves (6-2, 1-2). Freshman guard Lindsey Kitchens led North Georgia in the first half, making all four of her shots from the field and three big three pointers in the final minutes of the half.
UNCP kept the score close through much of the first frame, taking the lead six different times throughout the first half. Junior guard Lauren Lingenfelter led the Lady Braves with eight points in the first half. UNCP shot 35% (10-29) from the field in the first half and could not keep pace with the Lady Saints who shot a scorching 50% (17-34) from the field and behind the arc in the half.
The Lady Braves came out on fire in the second half and went on a 15-10 run in the first 10 minutes to cut the North Georgia lead to nine. UNCP whittled away at the Lady Saints lead until they tied the game 61-61 with less than four minutes remaining in the game. Senior forward Lara Seamon got the ball and drove to the hoop at the three-minute mark and knocked down a lay-up with a foul. She converted the three-point play the hard way and put North Georgia up for good. The Lady Saints finished the game on a 10-0 run to overtake the Lady Braves.
In her first collegiate start, freshman forward Syretha Marble scored a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kitchens represented the freshman class as well with 11 points and one block while senior guard Katie Williamson chipped in 11 points with six assists. Sophomore guard Victoria Willis led the UNCP attack with 14 points while Lingenfelter chipped in 12 points.
North Georgia will play again Monday at home against Delta State University at 5:30 in a non-conference game. The Lady Braves will face Division I opponent Elon University on December 30 on the road for their next contest. |
