Milledgeville, Ga. – The North Georgia College & State University Lady Saints claimed sole possession of the 2005-06 Peach Belt Conference Women’s Basketball Regular Season Championship with a 77-63 victory over Georgia College & State University Saturday night in the Centennial Center.
North Georgia (22-3, 18-0 PBC) wins the title in its first year in the league for its 15 consecutive victory, while GC&SU (14-11, 9-9 PBC) has its brief two-game win streak snapped. It marks the Lady Saints fifth consecutive conference championship, beginning with the 2002 GAC championship.
The Lady Saints wasted no time in taking over the game, using a 14-0 first half run to take a 30-10 lead and stretching things out to a 38-16 advantage at halftime. GC&SU shot a dismal 19% (7-37) on its own floor in the first frame, including a 1-for-13 performance from three point range. North Georgia shot 38.5% (15-39) in the first half. Megan Huffman led the Lady Saints with 10 points and the break, while LaWanna Leon led GC&SU with 10 points as well.
The Lady Bobcats made a game of it in the second half by opening the frame on a 13-1 run to get within ten points. GC&SU would remain at arm’s length the rest of the way but could never cut the deficit down to single digits.
Syretha Marble led North Georgia with 18 points, while Megan Huffman finished with 14, and Lindsey Huffman scored 10. Leon led GC&SU with 24 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year, while Lindsey Smith added 11 points.
