LADY SAINTS SURVIVE SCARE FROM LADY JAGUARS
Dahlonega, Ga. – Augusta State University kept the highest scoring offense in the Peach Belt Conference to only 73 points, but North Georgia College & State University's defense held off the Lady Jaguars as the Lady Saints picked up their first PBC win of the season, 73-61.
The Lady Saints (5-0, 1-0) got off to a good start in the first half and quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead three minutes into the game. The Lady Jaguars (2-3, 0-1) made their first bucket of the night at the 17-minute mark off of a couple of free throws from junior forward Tiffany Paschal . The score sparked a 9-3 ASU run that was capped off with a jumper by junior forward Shirrell Ford to give the Lady Jaguars their first lead of the night. North Georgia came right back and tied the game once again with a lay-up from senior post Jeanine Dorminey. The lead went back-and-forth three more times before the Lady Saints went ahead 26-24 on another lay-up from Dorminey with 3:13 left to play. North Georgia finished off the half with a 6-2 run to head into intermission with a 32-26 lead.
Senior guard Katie Williamson led the charge in the first half with six points shooting 2-for-3 from behind the 3-point arc. Junior forward Tamala Turner led ASU with seven points and Paschal chipped in seven as well off the bench.
The Lady Jaguars kept the game close throughout the second half and tied the game with 5:03 left off of a lay-up from Paschal. North Georgia fought back and took the lead for good with 3:23 to go in the game with a free throw by junior post Jenica Johnson to give the Lady Saints a 60-59 lead. The Lady Saints finished the game with a pair of free throws from Williamson to seal the victory, 73-61.
The Lady Saints were led by Johnson and freshman guard Syretha Marble, who each had 13 points off the bench to lead North Georgia. Marble added 13 rebounds to the effort along with Dorminey who chipped in seven with nine points. Williamson added 12 points and senior guard Lindsey Huffman had 11.
ASU was led by a game high of 18 from junior forward Tamala Turner . Paschal scored a double-double for the Lady Jaguars with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
North Georgia will take to the floor again on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. against USC Aiken on the road. ASU will take on Morris in Sumter, S.C. on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. |
