BURSON NAMES WOMEN'S COLLEGE COACH OF THE YEAR
Dahlonega, Ga. – Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Friday, April 7th women’s basketball head coach Buffie Burson was named Whack Hyder State of Georgia Women’s College Coach of the Year.
Burson guided her Lady Saints into the Peach Belt Conference this season and promptly won the regular-season championship with a 23-4 overall mark, 19-1 in the conference, setting a new PBC record for most conference wins in a season. Burson committed said, “I don’t take credit for what is going on right now, I just think we have a really good nucleus of players with a mixture of experience and youthful talent. We have found chemistry this year, and when you do that there is just no stopping you.”In her 12th season at North Georgia, and her inaugural season in the NCAA Burson claimed the PBC coach of the year award. Burson is only five wins away from her 300th career victory and has amassed 295 wins with only 98 losses in her career.
John “Whack" Hyder, for whom the award is named, was head basketball coach at Georgia Tech from 1951-1973. Coach Hyder is a founder and life member of the basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Coach Hyder is a member of the Georgia Tech Hall of Fame, State of Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and the Blue Ridge Mountain Area Sports Hall of Fame. The Georgia College Coaches of the Year are appropriately called the “Whack Hyder Coach of the Year Awards.”
