#1 UNION SURVIVES 84-77 AGAINST #24 NORTH GEORGIA
Dahlonega, Ga. – The number one ranked Union University Lady Bulldogs (14-0) were down at the half, but managed to come back in the second to defeat #24 North Georgia College & State University (7-6) 84-77 in non-conference women’s basketball action.
Union had the lead for much of the first half thanks to good production from each player on the court. Freshman guard Meridith Richardson (Bradford, Tenn.) shot 50% from the field and went 2-4 from behind the arc to lead the Lady Bulldogs with eight points in the half. Union had a 12 point lead five minutes into the game and led until junior guard Katie Williamson (Suwanee, Ga.) sunk a jumper to give the Lady Saints a 30-29 lead with 44 seconds left to play. A fast-break lay-up from senior forward Katie Schleisman (Suwanee, Ga.) gave North Georgia a three point lead heading into the second half.
In the second half, the Lady Saints increased their lead early to six off of a lay-up from senior forward Brandi Owen (Cornelia, Ga.). Three minutes into the half, the Lady Bulldogs took the lead with a big three pointer from junior guard Jennifer Henson (Bradford, Tenn.) to make the score 41-40. Union never lost the lead for the remainder of the game as the Lady Saints could only come to within four points of the lead.
North Georgia was paced by freshman guard Megan Huffman (Woodstock, Ga.), who scored 19 with five rebounds and five assists. Richardson led Union with a game high 26 points after shooting 63% (10-16) from the field and 50% (5-10) from the three point line.
Next up for the Lady Saints is a conference game against Georgia Southwestern State University on January 6 at 6:00 p.m. in Americus, Ga. The Lady Bulldogs will play Campbellsville University at home on January 13 at 5:00 p.m.
