LADY FLAMES DEFEAT LADY SAINTS 63-61 IN SSAC ACTION

Cleveland, Tenn . - Balanced scoring and play off the bench were keys as the Lee University Lady Flames made their debut in the Southern State Athletic Conference a success with a nip-and-tuck 63-61 victory over North Georgia College and State University.

North Georgia is a perennial power in NAIA women's basketball and Lee first-year coach Marty Rowe was pleased that his Lady Flames were able to pull out the home-court win. The battle was close from start to finish and neither team was able to grab the upper hand. Rowe praised the effort of senior Heidi Hamilton, sophomore Danielle Bobo and point-guard Heidi Rominger as the Lady Flames scored their sixth win of the season against just one defeat.

Hamilton paced the Lady Flames with 14 points. She made 3-of-3 3-pointers and was 3-of-4 from the free throw line. The senior also battled hard on defense and came away with three important steals. Bobo came off the bench to also hit some critical field goals and tally 11 points in just 14 minutes of playing time. Rominger against a rugged Lady Saints defense played 39 of her team's 40 minutes. She had seven assists and four steals to go along with her four points.

For the Lady Saints, Brandi Owen was the leader with 16 points and nine rebounds. Katie Schleisman tossed in 12 points and Rachel Jolley totaled 11 points.

Lee lost the rebounding battle to the taller Lady Saints 40-35. Both teams were guilty of 24 floor mistakes. Lee shot 44 percent from the field (25-of-57). They made 5-of-19 3-point attempts for 67 percent.

North Georgia shot 39 percent from the field (24-of-62). The Lady Saints canned 6-of-18 3-point shots (33 percent) and made 7-of-10 free tosses.

The Lady Flames will take a 1-0 league mark into a non-conference game at Tennessee Wesleyan on Thursday and then hit the road to face Southern Wesleyan University in a conference game on Saturday afternoon. North Georgia returns to the hardwood on Thursday as they travel to Reinhardt College to take on the Lady Eagles at 6:00 pm.
