SAINTS WIN NIGHTCAP AND SPLIT WITH SPARTANS
Moss picks up win, Skeels homers in victory
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – North Georgia College & State University pulled out 6-3 win the nightcap to split a double-header with USC Spartans here Tuesday night. In the first game the Spartans scored two late runs for a 2-1 victory.
With the game tied 3-3 in the fifth, Page Raynor drilled a triple to right-center, and scored on a wild pitch to give the Saints a 4-3 lead. Brittany Cobb added another run on an RBI groundout score Whitney Propes to cap a two-run fifth for the home team. Andrea Moss (18-5) would pick the win, tossing a complete game while allowing three runs and striking out four.
USC Upstate (37-9, 14-4 PBC) took the early lead when Ashleigh Beck hit a bomb over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead. After the home run, a 74 minute rain delay settled into the Dahlonega and both teams rested before the Saints came out surging, scoring a run in the second off an error to plate Leslee Smith. Jessica Skeels came up in the third and hit her eighth home run of the year as she went yard to tie the game at 2-2. The Saints would add another run in the inning as Smith scored on a wild pitch.
The Spartans would tie the game in the fifth before the Saints late game heroics sent the Spartans packing with a key conference battle split.
In game one, USC Upstate scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to defeat North Georgia courtesy of a pair of singles.
North Georgia scored first in the fourth inning when Krista Bess’ single brought home Brittany Cobb from second. The Spartans answered in the sixth when Vanesa Flores singled home Katie Adams to tie the game at 1-1, and they would pull ahead when Ana Mitchell singled to bring home pinch runner Melissa Lockey.
Andrea Moss (17-5) suffered the loss with a complete-game, scattering nine hits. Brittany Rice (13-5) pitched a complete-game six-hitter for USC Upstate.
North Georgia (28-13, 10-2 PBC) hosts second-ranked Columbus State on Thursday night at 5:00 pm.
