SAINTS TAKE PAIR FROM AUGUSTA STATE
Saints wear pink as they strike out cancer

Dahlonega, GA – North Georgia College & State University used a solid pitching performance from Andrea Moss to take game one 4-2, and timely hitting in the second game to capture a 5-3 victory and series sweep over Augusta State University here Tuesday afternoon. Between the double-header the Saints honored cancer survivors and remembered loved ones who tragically passed.

North Georgia (24-11, 9-1 PBC) jumped on the board first in the opening inning on a bunt single by Whitney Propes and a two-out double over the leftfielders head by Brittany Cobb for an early 1-0 Saints lead.

The Saints threatened in the third when Amy Dumas loaded the bases on three straight walks, but a line drive double play and a pop-up ended the third inning with the score remaining 1-0.

In the fifth, Augusta State’s Brooke Southerland laced a double in the gap to left-center to score Jessie Sadlowsky for a 1-1 tie. Two batters later, the Jaguars took their first lead of the day on another double, this time by Jessica Matta who sent a ball to right-center to plate Southerland for a 2-1 advantage.

The Saints took the lead right back in the sixth with clutch-hitting from freshman Leslee Smith, who lined a ball to the wall in center to plate Candace Shubert and Jessica Skeels for a 3-2 lead. After back-to-back walks to load the bases, Page Raynor was hit by an 0-2 pitch to plate Smith and extend the lead to two at 4-2. Brittany Cobb then stepped in the box with the bases still jammed and grounded to first to end the inning.

Moss (14-4) picked up the win in game one as went the distance tossing seven innings allowing six hits and two earned runs. Dumas (11-7) is tagged with the loss as she went six innings and allowed five hits and four earned runs.

In the second game, the Jaguars used a leadoff walk and a one-out single to center by Paige Philips to take an early 1-0 lead. The Saints got out of the early inning jam on a routine double play to Smith at shortstop.

Smith continued her hot hitting in the second inning with a two out double down the left field line to score Shubert and tie the game 1-1. Shubert got the two-out rally started with a triple over the to the wall in left to set up the third RBI of the day for Smith. Augusta State rallied right back in the third with two runs on a double by Phillips to score Matta and Anna Tedder and take a 3-1 lead. The Saints had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the inning with two runners in scoring position and they got a clutch two out single from Cobb to plate Goodlet and Propes to knot the game at 3-3.

The Saints would take the lead one last time in the fifth inning on a bases loaded walk to Shubert and an infield error that allowed Smith to reach and bring to runs to the plate for a 5-3 win.

Propes (4-3) grabs the win as she went 3 2/3 innings allowing four hits and two runs. Moss came in to shut the door in the seventh and pick up her second save of the season. Danielle Metzger gets the loss and falls to 3-5 on the year as she allowed two hits and two runs in 2/3 of an inning.

The Saints will return to action in the Ryan’s Classic on Friday March 30, at 3pm against King College.
