SAINTS WERE DEFEATED IN FIRE MOUNTAIN FINALE
Dahlonega, Ga. – North Georgia College & State University rallied to tie the game, but allowed three runs in the fifth to fall 4-2 to Valdosta State University in the final contest of the 2006 Fire Mountain Classic.
The Blazers (35-17) jumped ahead of the Saints in the first inning with back-to-back two out doubles from Holly Willis and Caroline Cripe to take a 1-0 lead.
The North Georgia (24-20) half of the third saw Tootie Johnson lead off with a liner to right that fell in for a hit. Page Raynor followed with a sacrifice bunt to get Johnson to second and Brittany Cobb rolled a ball through the middle to score Johnson and tie the game 1-1. For Cobb, the game tying RBI was her 14th of the year and for Johnson, it was her 19th run scored.
The Blazers fought right back in the top of the fifth with a two out rally that included three walks and three hits to plate Peaches Ramsey, Trele Edwards, and Willis. The rally put the lead right back into the Blazers hands at 4-1.
The Saints had one last chance in the seventh, but only put up one run on a single by Rachel Norris as they fell 4-2 to the Blazers.
Brittany Barnes picked up the loss for the Saints as she fell to 2-1 on the year. Blazers’ starting pitcher Lindsey Lloyd tossed a complete game to pick up the win and improved to 15-5 on the year.
