SAINTS STORM PAST CRUSADERS IN SOFTBALL DOUBLE HEADER
Lynsey Thompson Blasts Two Home Runs
Dahlonega, Ga. – North Georgia College & State University felt right at home as members of the NCAA in their opening double header of the 2006 season. The Saints defeated Belmont Abbey College 10-0 and 12-3 Sunday afternoon at the NGCSU Softball Complex.
North Georgia’s (2-0) senior shortstop Lynsey Thompson knocked two home runs in the double header and tallied four RBI’s. Sophomore center fielder Brittany Cobb also had a good day at the plate, going 4-for-7 with two triples and three runs scored.
Game 1
| A six run fourth inning capped off with a two-run homer by Thompson propelled the Saints to their first win as a member of the NCAA. North Georgia jumped out to an early two run lead in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated the Crusaders 10-0 in five innings. Cobb and sophomore third baseman Brittany Barnes both went 2-for-3 to lead the Saints offense. Junior starting pitcher Dana Lowery pitched a shutout to pick up her first win at North Georgia. She struck out four batters and scattered four hits in a complete game. Junior starter Danielle Dodd took the loss for Belmont Abbey (1-3), allowing six earned runs off of six hits in 3.1 innings of work. |

Game 2
The Crusaders had the bases loaded in the first inning and a runner on third in the second, but sophomore starting pitcher Rachel Bridges was able to put out both fires to keep Belmont Abbey off the board. The Saints opened the second game with a triple by Cobb and Thompson’s second homer to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The third inning for North Georgia saw seven runs cross the plate, two off of the bat of sophomore left fielder Krista Bess after she shot her first home run of the season over the left field fence.
The Crusaders were able to get on the board in the fourth inning after sophomore catcher Jessica Inman tripled to right field, scoring two runs. Inman later scored off of an infield error to cut the Saints lead to 9-3. North Georgia rallied back with three runs in the fourth to go up 12-3 and Bridges was able to strike out three batters in the top of the fifth to close out the game.
Bridges picked up her first win of the season after pitching five innings and scattering five hits with two earned runs. Freshman starter Danielle Relyea took the loss after tossing 2.1 innings and allowing six earned runs off of five hits. |

North Georgia returns to action on February 11 against West Georgia on the road. The Crusaders will play their third double header in as many days tomorrow against Mars Hill College in their home opener slated to begin at 2:00 p.m.
