NORTH GEORGIA FALLS TO NATIONALLY-RANKED COLUMBUS STATE
Peach Belt Conference foes hook up in Alpharetta
ALPHARETTA, Ga. - North Georgia College & State University dropped a pair of matches to nationally-ranked Columbus State at the Windward Club this afternoon.
On the men's side, North Georgia (3-7, 0-4 PBC) fell to the 24th-ranked Cougars 9-0. Junior Vlad Lumezeanu provided a spark for the Saints, and gave the team a chance to win at #3 doubles and at #5 doubles this afternoon. Lumezeanu fell to Alexandru Vasilescu 6-4, 6-3, and in doubles - with teammate William Davis - fell to the Cougars' tandem of Vasilescu and Guillermo Echevarria 8-6.
The remainder of the of doubles play went to Columbus State with the team of Nemanja Djuric and Igor Grbic defeating the Saints' team of Sam Moore and Marijan Bal 8-0 at #1 doubles. In the #2 doubles, the Saints' team of Jake Eastwood and Gustavo Carballal fell to Paul Van Rensburg and Luis Gonzalez-Tolentino 8-3.
In singles play, North Georgia's Eastwood fell to 29th-ranked Echevarria 6-1, 6-1 at #1 singles. In #2 singles, Moore was upended by Columbus State's Djuric 6-1, 6-1, while Bal lost at #3 with the identical score. Carballal was defeated by Columbus State's Van Rensburg at #4 singles 6-2, 6-1, and at #6 Davis was defeated by Brent Schoening 6-2, 6-2.
Meanwhile, on the women's side, North Georgia (1-8, 0-4 PBC) lost to seventh-ranked Columbus State 9-0.
In doubles action, the Lady Saints team of Lilia Tzuetanova and Maria Dreaden fell to the 12th-ranked team of Raluca Moldovan and Roxana Dondera 8-2. In the #2 slot, the Lady Saints team of Katerine Harrison and Caitie Murphy fell to Daniela Castillo and Erin Reynolds 8-1, while at #3 the Lady Saints team of Cassie Martin and Amey Kearns fell to the team of Agata Polcyn and Lindsey Groenewald 8-0.
In singles play, the Lady Saints Tzuetanova fell to 26th-ranked Moldovan 6-0, 6-3; at #2 Harrison fell to Dondera 6-0, 6-1; at #3 Dreaden fell to Castillo 6-1, 6-0; at #4 Murphy fell to Groenewald 6-1, 6-1; at #5 Martin lost to Reynolds 6-1, 6-2; and at #6 Jenny Bridges fell to Tamiris Diversi 6-0, 6-0.
North Georgia is off until March 18 when they host Peach Belt Conference rival Georgia College & State University.
