SAINTS FALL TO NEWBERRY
North Georgia defaults two matches, lose close match
NEWBERRY, S.C. - North Georgia College & State University fell to Newberry College 6-3 in non-conference tennis action Thursday afternoon.
The Saints had a chance to win the match, but were hampered by two forfeits - one in singles and one in doubles - due to being shorthanded by illness.
The Saints claimed victories at number three singles, number one singles and at number one doubles to help make the match close.
In singles, the Saints' Ronald Eastwood defeated Daryl Van Vuuren 7-5, 6-3; at #2 singles Newberry's Maxim Sukharev defeated Cornelis Bal in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-0; at #3 singles the Saints' Gustavo Carballal defeated Jeremy Smith 5-7, 6-4, 10-6; at #4 singles Newberry's Lucas Mattos defeated Vlad Lumezanu 6-2, 6-2; and at #5 singles Felipe Sobrinho defeated NGCSU's William Davis 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles action, the team of Eastwood and Carballal claimed victory at #1 over Van Vurren and Gates 9-7; at #2 doubles Sukharev and Smith defeated Bal and Lumezanu 8-6; and at #3 doubles Mattos and Sobrinho won by default.
