FIRST-HALF GOALS DOOM NORTH GEORGIA
Saints fall to 2-3 in Peach Belt Conference play
Aiken, S.C. – North Georgia College & State University was unable to overcome two first-half goals by USC Aiken, falling to the Pacers 2-0 in Peach Belt Conference play here Saturday evening.
With the win, the Pacers remain unbeaten in conference play and ascend to the top of the standings, taking over sole possession of first place. Meanwhile, North Georgia remains in the middle of the pack with two conference games remaining on the season.
Durell Johnson got the Pacers started in the 16th minute of play, taking a Raymond Sarfo cross in the box and beating Brandon Kirksey from ten yards out for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Johnson's second of the season.
Less than four minutes later, freshman Corey Adamson scored his third goal of the season banging home a shot from 15 yards out on a ball played through by Reuben Ojeyinka.
Despite outshooting the Pacers 12-9, the Saints never could find the back of the net. Their best scoring chance came with under five minutes to play in the match. Sheldon Best got behind the defense and fired a one-on-one shot from 20 yards out, but Harold Tate made the diving stop. Making four saves on the night, Tate recorded his fourth shutout of the season for USC Aiken (8-4-1, 3-0-1 PBC).
Kirksey recorded four saves for North Georgia (4-8-1, 2-3-0 PBC), which returns to action on Wednesday at home in non-conference action against Montevallo.
