NORTH GEORGIA STUNS #6 BERRY 1-0
Calvin Smith Scores Game Winning Goal in Final Minutes of Match
Dahlonega, Ga. - In a match that saw numerous close calls and physical play on both sides, the Saints (3-2-2, 2-0-1) came away with a huge upset off of the foot of senior forward Calvin Smith (Flowery Branch, Ga.) as they defeated #6 in the nation Berry College (6-2-0, 3-2-0) 1-0. This also marked the first win for North Georgia in their new home, the North Georgia Soccer Complex.
The first half of the match was deadlocked with both teams unable to make a clean break away on offense. The Vikings out shot the Saints seven to five in the half, but none of Berry's and only two of North Georgia's shots were on goal.
In the second half both teams went on the attack and took 20 combined shots. Freshman Chapin LaChance (Dahlonega, Ga.) took over in goal in the second half and made two saves. Vikings senior goal keeper Byron Schueneman (Woodstock, Ga.) was equally as good for Berry as he made four saves. In the final minute of the half, Saints junior defender Eric Robidou (Conyers, Ga.) was able to pass the ball forward to Smith who beat Schueneman for the game winning goal.
North Georgia moves on to face 10th ranked Auburn University Montgomery this Wednesday at home for another SSAC showdown at 6:00 p.m. Berry will face Tennessee Wesleyan University at home this Monday at 5:00 p.m. in a non-conference match.
