SAINTS THREATEN IN 9TH BUT FALL 3-2 TO FALCONS
North Georgia looks to salvage series finale tomorrow afternoon
Box Score
DAHLONEGA, GA – The 20th-ranked North Georgia College & State University Saints fell behind early and never recovered as they dropped the second game of the three game series 3-2 to Pfieffer University here Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
Pfeiffer (5-1) continued to shut down the Saints offense the middle game of the weekend series, allowing just one earned run on the day. After allowing three runs early, North Georgia shut down the Falcons as well, with Jacob Rickett making his second collegiate appearrance and striking out four in 3.1 innings of hitless work.
Pfeiffer University jumped on top in the third inning with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hayes Hinson to make it a 1-0 Falcons lead. They would add another run in the inning on three hits and strand a pair to take a 2-0 advantage.
North Georgia came right back in fourth and used speed on the bases to force a Falcon error and bring Logan Sharrett home for the Saints first run of the game. Three stolen bases in the inning led to the run as the Saints pulled to within one at 2-1.
North Georgia followed in the fifth and tied the game 2-2 on a groundout by Andrew Jones to bring Rob Flanigan racing home.
The game would not be tied for long however, as the Falcons took the lead once again in the next half inning on a Zach Strickland single to give Pfeiffer the 3-2 advantage.
The Saints threatened in the ninth with two on and only one out, but a Daniel Petitti line drive was caught and turned into a double play to end the game.
Ben Beard picked up the win for the Falcons, while James Wiley (0-2) was tagged with the loss. Both teams received perfection from the pen in the late innings as they combined for 7.1 innings of scoreless ball.
North Georgia (2-3) will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. for the series finale against Pfieffer University.
