SAINTS DROP 9-8 HEARTBREAKER TO PATRIOTS
North Georgia swept for first time this season
Box Score
FLORENCE, SC – North Georgia College & State University looked to avoid a three-game sweep Sunday afternoon at Francis Marion University, but the Patriots scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch to take the series finale 9-8 in Peach Belt Conference action.
North Georgia found themselves down a run heading to the 9th inning, but Daniel Petitti stroked a one out single to right field, and with two outs, Craig Brisson delivered his third triple of year to bring Petitti racing home from first to tie the game 8-8.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Patriots coaxed a leadoff walk, and eventually found themselves with the bases loaded and two out. With the Saints just one out away from sending the game to extra innings, an untimely wild pitch brought home the game-winning run and gave the home team a 9-8 win in walk-off fashion.
In the first and second inning, the Saints' bats came alive with five hits and seven runs to take a 7-2 lead. A six spot in the second inning was capped by a based loaded double to center field off the bat of Kevin Morrison to plate three unearned runs and give North Georgia a five run lead.
FMU would add a single run in the fourth before breaking out for a five spot in the eighth, including a Ryan Hypke bases clearing double, scoring three of the five runs and setting up the dramatic last at-bat win.
Zach Black (1-3) suffered the lost, allowing a run on three walks in the ninth inning, while Zach Farry (4-1) picked up the win, facing just one batter in the ninth and inducing a fly out to right field.
North Georgia (18-16, 8-10 PBC) returns to action, Tuesday, April 1, hosting Anderson University at 6:00 p.m.
