SAINTS SWEEP PIRATES, PUSH WIN STREAK TO NINE GAMES
North Georgia continues climb up PBC standings
Game 1 | Game 2
SAVANNAH, GA – North Georgia College & State University ran its win streak to nine with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of #24 Armstrong Atlantic State on Saturday afternoon at Pirate Field. The Saints took game one, 3-2, then blasted 18 hits in a 15-9 game two victory.
Chris Curtis (6-2) hurled a five-hit complete-game gem in game one, giving up just two runs in the 3-2 victory. With the score tied, 1-1, Chad Sage’s two-out RBI single put the Saints (27-16, 13-10 PBC) ahead by one, then Anders Oster’s double to right field was misplayed by Nick Pyron, allowing Sage to score, making it 3-1.
The Pirates (22-14, 10-10 PBC) moved to within one on Josh Wilson’s solo shot in the bottom of the sixth, but Curtis gave up just one hit over the final three innings to secure the victory. Cody Walden was the hard-luck loser for the Pirates, giving up six hits and three runs – one earned – in seven innings.
Game two saw the Saints erase an early 3-0 AASU lead with a six-run third inning, keyed by Rob Flanagan’s three-run home run to center field, putting North Georgia up, 6-3. A seven-run eighth inning put the game out of reach – highlighted by Chad Sage’s grand slam home run to left field. AASU’s Joey Davis countered with a grand slam home run of his own in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Garrett Lussi (2-2) retired the next three batters to claim the victory. Lussi went five innings, giving up seven hits and the grand slam while striking out three to pick up the win. Jeff Chase (4-3) was the loser for the Pirates, giving up 12 hits and eight runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Sage finished the doubleheader with four hits and six RBIs to lead the Saints, while Flanigan had five hits in the doubleheader with four runs scored and three RBI. Josh Wilson went 3-for-5, while Davis finished game two with a two-hit, five-RBI day for the Pirates that included a solo home run as well as his grand slam.
The two teams wrap up their Peach Belt Conference series with a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Pirate Field.
