NORTH GEORGIA FALLS IN SERIES OPENER TO WEST FLORIDA
Saints play second of three game series tomorrow afternoon

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – North Georgia College & State University gave up a run in the ninth and came up short in their comback effort, falling 2-1 to 14th-ranked West Florida here Friday night.

West Florida (20-5) took advantage of an early throwing error by Justin Ricket on a double-play ball and plated Jacob Wisenhunt to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning.  Saints pitcher Chris Curtis went to work at that point, shuting down the Argonauts for six and two-thirds innings
without an earned run.

The Saints had trouble finding their offense early in the game, as West Florida’s Jon Sintes settled in with three straight scoreless innings. In the fourth, the Saints fought back tie the score 1-1 without the benefit of a hit as Sintes made his only mistake of the night by balking to bring home Andre Airich who had reached on a walk.

North Georgia finally broke into the hit column with a liner through the right side in the bottom of the eighth. Josh Tate following two batters later with an infield single to load the bases with two outs. Kevin Morrison took a 3-1 strike, and then grounded the payoff ptich to short to end the inning.

West Florida took the lead in top of the ninth, as Caleb Copeland pitched in his second inning of work. An RBI single through the left side gave the Argonauts a 2-1 advantage. The Saints had their chance in the ninth, with two runners on, but West Florida’s Phil Lawhorn picked up the save as he struck out the side and sealed a 2-1 win in game one of the three game weekend series.

Copeland drops to 0-2 after going 2.1 innings and giving up one run and striking out two. Sintes was awarded the win after tossing 7.1 innings of no hit ball and striking out eight.

North Georgia (8-10, 3-3 PBC) will go right back at it again tomorrow in game two of the series against West Florida at 3pm.
