SAINTS WALK AWAY WITH VICTORY OVER AASU
Daniel Petitti wins game with walk-off single down left field line
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Freshman catcher Daniel Petitti clinched at least a tie for fourth place in the Peach Belt Conference for North Georgia College & State University, as he singled home Anders Oster with the game-winning run in a 4-3 victory over 25th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Oster started the ninth off for the Saints with a one-out bunt single down the third base line, before Creston Warner drew a one-out, full-count walk. That set the stage for Petitti who laced a pitch from Nate Herder into the left field corner that scored Oster with the winning run for North Georgia (33-21, 16-12 PBC).
The game started off in fine fashion for the Saints when Craig Brisson scored the game’s first run with a homerun to left centerfield for a 1-0 Saints lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
However, the lead was short-lived for the Saints, as Armstrong Atlantic plated two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Kenny Cail hit a two-run double to right centerfield to give Armstrong Atlantic (34-19, 14-14 PBC) the lead before North Georgia tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Neil Krock ran out a ground ball hit to Cail that was mishandled by Tyler Evans at first. The misplay enabled Petitti to score the tying run.
The two teams traded runs in the seventh before Petitti’s heroics in the ninth.
Truman Marek and Cail each collected two hits in the loss, with Cail collecting two RBI. Meanwhile, for North Georgia, Oster went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI and Andre Airich went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Petitti collected two hits in the victory.
Nate Herder (3-3) suffered the loss, going 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Austin Ducey. He allowed two runs off of four hits.
Garrett Lussi (5-2) picked up the victory, going two innings in of scoreless relief for the Saints.
The two teams play the final two games of the series beginning at 5 pm tomorrow at the NGCSU Baseball Complex.
