NORTH GEORGIA CLAIMS SERIES FROM #8 GCSU ON ROAD
Chris Curtis pitches complete-game shutout to claim third game of series
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Junior righthander Chris Curtis pitched a complete-game shutout in the series finale to help lead North Georgia College & State University to a 2-0 victory in the third game of the series, helping them to claim the series over eighth-ranked Georgia College & State University.
The junior worked out of several jams in the contest, and even ended the game on a ground ball double play to pick up the victory. With his team up 1-0, Curtis did not give up his first hit until the third inning and worked out of jams in the fourth and sixth to perserve the victory.
In the fourth inning, Curtis faced a situation with a runner at third with only one out and managed to get consecutive ground ball outs to end the inning. In the sixth inning, Curtis gave up a lead-off single and stranded the runner at second after recording consecutive outs to end the inning.
Curtis (6-3) went the distance, facing just six over the minimum in picking up the victory. He walked three (one of which was intentional) and struck out five.
North Georgia got on the board in the fourth inning after Brad Hall reached on a one-out single to get the rally started. He advanced to second on a two-out single by Brisson, and then scored when Andre Airich hit a ground ball to second that would have ended the inning but was mishandled by the Bobcats' infield.
They added an insurance run in the seventh when Creston Warner reached on a two-out infield single. He advanced to second on a throwing error by the Bobcats' infield on a groundball by Anders Oster. Warner scored when Kevin Morrison singled to left to put North Georgia up 2-0.
Brisson led the Saints at the plate, going 2-for-4, while Hall went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Warner was 1-for-2 at the plate, while Morrison went 1-for-3.
Jason Bennett suffered the loss for the Bobcats, lasting four innings and giving up one run and five hits.
In the first game, GCSU (36-11, 18-6 PBC) opened the scoring in the first and never looked back in a 15-2 victory. Don Brice suffered his first collegiate loss, lasting just 1 2/3 innings and giving up five runs on three hits. He also walked four.
Brisson and Justin Rickett drove in the Saints' two runs.
North Georgia (26-17, 12-9 PBC) returns to action on Tuesday night against Emory University at 8 pm. The game is part of Student-Athlete Appreciation Night at the NGCSU Baseball and Softball Complex.
Due to a power outage in Milledgeville, box scores were unavailable on Sunday night.
