NORTH GEORGIA EDGES ERSKINE IN EXTRA INNINGS
Sensational freshman reliever Mike Peters continues magic on mound
DUE WEST, S.C. – North Georgia College & State University won their sixth straight game, edging Erskine College 16-11 in 12 innings in non-conference baseball action here Tuesday afternoon.
After a scoreless 11th, the Saints scored five runs in the top of the 12th inning to claim the victory over the homestanding Flying Fleet, and extend their winning streak.
Following a groundout to start the inning, freshman rightfielder Craig Brisson drew a one-out walk. He advanced to second when freshman second baseman Andre Airich was hit by a pitch, and the bases became loaded when sophomore centerfielder Josh Tate reached on a fielding error by the second baseman with one out. For the second consecutive game, a freshman showed patience at the plate by drawing a bases-loaded walk. On Sunday it was Airich with a game-winner, on Tuesday it was freshman leftfielder Kevin Morrison drawing the walk to bring home Brisson for the eventual game-winner. Senior third baseman Justin Rickett provided the big blow of the inning with a bases-clearing double to push the Saints lead to 15-11. The final run was driven home on a groundout by sophomore shortstop Anders Oster.
Before the Saints could win the game in the 12th, they had to overcome a one-run deficit in the ninth inning just to force extra innings. Trailing 11-10 in the ninth inning, the Saints used a string of base hits to tie the game and force extra innings. Tate singled to give the Saints a runner at first, and he advanced to third on a single by Morrison before a Rickett sacrifice fly scored to Tate to tie the game at 11-11.
Morrison and Oster led the Saints at the plate, each going 4-for-6 with two runs batted in. Brisson was 3-for-5, while Airich was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and Rickett went 2-for-5 with six runs batted in.
Mike Peters (2-0) pitched 4 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball to pick up the win out of the bullpen.
North Georgia (15-11, 6-3 PBC) returns to non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon hosting Southern Wesleyan University, in search of their seventh consecutive victory.
