#7 SAINTS SPLIT DOUBLE HEADER WITH LEE
Flames take first game 4-1, Saints second game 5-3

Dahlonega, Ga. – Each team took a game in the double header Saturday afternoon at the NGCSU Baseball Complex, but Lee University (4-2, 2-1) took the weekend series 2-1 from seventh ranked North Georgia College & State University (8-2, 1-2).

Game 1

Using a four run second inning, the Flames gave junior starting pitcher B.J. Church (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) all the insurance he needed and secured their second Southern States Athletic Conference win. Church pitched five innings and scattered four hits while striking out three batters.

In the first inning, two LC batters were given free passes to first with a walk and a hit batsman. The only hit of the inning was an RBI double by senior shortstop Chris Shepherd (Normal, Ill.). Two runs were scored off of two fielders choices, and senior third baseman Matt Martin (McMinnville, Tenn.) scored on an error.

The Saints got their single run on the board in the seventh inning after junior centerfielder Clayton Rhoads (Suwanee, Ga.) scored on a sacrifice fly. North Georgia had the bases loaded with two outs in the final inning, but were unable to move the runners across the plate as the Flames' sophomore reliever Daniel Howard (Hixson, Tenn.) forced a ground out to finish the game.

Church picked up his first win of the season while Saints' senior starting pitcher Justin Stowe (Marietta, Ga.) lost his first game of the season after pitching three innings as well as giving up three hits and four earned runs.

Game 2

North Georgia got on the board first in the second game after junior catcher David Chastain (Canton, Ga.) singled in senior right fielder Richie Daigle (Alpharetta, Ga.). LU tied the game in the fourth inning after junior centerfielder Kyle Sullivan (Nashville, Tenn.) scored an unearned run. The Saints came right back in the bottom of the fourth and regained the lead 2-1 after freshman pinch runner Ryan Seay (Dawsonville, Ga.) scored on a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth, North Georgia put three runs on the board to take a 5-1 lead. Freshman designated hitter Erik Good (Dahlonega, Ga.) knocked an RBI singled to right field for the only hit of the inning. Two straight walks with two outs and the bases loaded gave the Saints two more runs before a strikeout ended the rally.

The Flames tried to mount a comeback in the final inning off of a two RBI double from senior catcher Jimmy Stanfield (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), but senior reliever Ryan Garmon (Dahlonega, Ga.) calmed down and got the final three outs to seal the win for North Georgia.

Senior starter Jason Willard (Columbus, Ga.) picked up his third win of the season after scattering five hits and not allowing any earned runs while striking out five batters. Senior starter David Dowdy (Clarksville, Tenn.) got the loss after going three innings and allowing one earned run off of three hits.

The Saints play again this Tuesday as they take on Bluefield College at 2:00 p.m. in Dahlonega. Lee will also play again on Tuesday as they visit Trevecca Nazarene University for a 1:00 p.m. ball game.
