NORTH GEORGIA WINS OVER GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN, 11-5

Shreveport, La . – If the first play of the game for Georgia Southwestern was any indication to the outcome, then they should have known they were in trouble on Wednesday.

Southwestern (29-23) began the bottom of the first inning against North Georgia (57-14) with a defensive error by shortstop Jake Mobley. This led to a four run inning by the Saints and a paved path to an 11-5 victory.

Both teams realized the importance of the game since it was an elimination game in the NAIA Region XIII Tournament. Both teams lost their first game of the double elimination contest on Tuesday.

North Georgia's starting pitcher Stephen Flake pitched a good enough game to get the win. He went five and one-thirds of an inning and struck out five. Although he was credited with giving up five runs, three of those came in the sixth inning before he was relieved by Skyler Webb.

Luckily for Flake, his offense was able to give him some good run support. North Georgia led the entire game, but their lead was trimmed down to only one run in the sixth inning when the score was 6-5.

The Hurricanes, seeded fifth in the tournament, posted runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Their starter, Jason Starr, pitched a long six innings and allowed 10 runs, eight earned, striking out four and walking three. Starr wasn't taken out of the game until the seventh inning when North Georgia's first baseman Creston Warner hit a two-run bomb.

Josh Drew came in to pitch for Starr and finished the game, giving up one run.

Big hitters for the number one seeded team in the tournament were North Georgia's Brian Lauderdale, 3-5 with two singles, a triple and one RBI; Kevin Bulger, 2-3 with a single, double, one RBI and two walks; Eric Good, 2-4 with a single, double and two RBIs; and Ryan Seay, 2-4 with a single and double.

Georgia Southwestern picked up their seven hits from Jake Mobley with a single; Jeremy McCall with a triple; Mitch Wade with a single; Dan Grahl with a single and RBI sacrifice fly; Justin McDonald with a two-RBI single and Patrick McCarthy with an RBI single.

North Georgia will go on to face the loser of the Lee vs. LSUS game. Georgia Southwestern has been eliminated from the tournament.

The NAIA Region XIII Baseball Tournament is being hosted by LSUS and sponsored by CHRISTUS Schumpert Health System and the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau.
