Instructional Technology Highlights from 2005

GSAMS Efficiencies

  • Eliminated reliance on GSAMS. Newer IP technology is reported by the faculty to be more reliable and has noticeably better audio.
  • In 2003, 82% of Distance Education classes started on time. In 2005, 99% started on time.
  • Fully disconnected from GSAMS network, with estimated $1500/month cost savings starting in November

Installations

  • New technologies and classroom upgrades in NOC 011, 013, 015, 016, 017, 019, 196, 297, Dunlap 205, 212, 107, MLC 111, 112A, 112B, 113, 117, Memorial 204, 205, 207, 208, 209, Donnovan Day Room, Schott Auditorium, HNS 137, 140.

Ratings

  • We began to rate our classrooms on a 5-point scale in basic instructional technology.  An inventory at the end of 2004 placed the university at 2.10. In 2005 we have scored 2.73.

Proposed Major Projects

Crestron Room Control

  • As we replace room controls to standardize our classrooms, one service we are missing is in-room help for our instructors. Our goal is to be able to provide quick access to technical assistance in the classroom for our teachers. Crestron Room Controls would bring us much closer to our goals.

Replacement MCU

  • The University currently has a Multi-point Control Unit that has been functional.  An MCU is used to connect more than 2 locations together in a videoconference which we have to do with nearly every nursing and several of our other distance education classes. As we add locations, we will require a more robust MCU. Our current one has allowed us to function without the unstable GSAMS network, however it is entirely Windows based and does not provide the functionality for which our instructors ask at the end of each semester

Room Upgrades

  • We will want to have a reserve to upgrade the technology in several classrooms which we will identify. For some of these upgrades we will apply for grants and student technology fee funding. However, we want to ensure the university budgets for and pays for at least three full classrooms or upgrades at least 5 classrooms in the coming year.
